state tax

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CT
My husband passed in Sept of 2006. Recently I received a letter from state of CT that there is no record of the state taxes being filled and payed for the year of 2005. I had no ideea about it, I thought my hustband took care of it along with the federal. I retrived copies from Turbo tax and found that my husband filled the federal taxes in April of 06 and filled for an extenssion for the state tax, witch was due oct. 2006. Now putting all this info together I belive no filling was done for State tax, prior to his death. I have my W2 forms for that year and see that state deductions were made accordingly, I don't have my husband's. I have only a pending request with a former employer.
The amout due in tax is very high, $ 3100, penaltys included. I would like to find out if there is any stipulation in the state law allowing me to fill in separatly at this time ? I need to mention that we were separated not divorced and the 2005 federal tax was filled jointly. I would appreciate any of your advices and recommandations! Thank you! What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

This particular forum is for Online Purchases and Sales. You are more likely to get an answer if you posted in the Taxes or Wills and Probate forums.

I rolled through anyway. If you have the federal form and don't have any partnerships, S-corp, or income property rental income, you should be able to use the numbers to complete your taxes. While you may be able to file with a different status (married, filing seperately), you will be questioned and you will need a tax professional to prepare the return and claim it as there are some technical issues.

The tax pro will also request a forgiveness of the penalties and give the reasons why. I think you have a good chance to get them removed.
