There is some value in being able to read the old posts. I think, with your suggestion, the posts would be available via the search engine; but, not for the casual reader who just wants to get caught up on a particular section. I think a lot of new people go back a considerable amount of time just to see what's being written and how who responds to what. That's where I learned who were the knowledge experts versus people who just wanted to post some rambling thoughts.

I can't remember which forum I was in at the time; but, they had it where you couldn't respond to a post older than (I think) four months. I don't remember if it was an automatic lock and / or there was a message the posting was too old for replies.

Yes I'm sure that some posts would like to be kept and they can be locked after moving them to say a forum called Best Of FreeForum that older posts with great questions and answers would go.

Is there perchance any way for the the board to automatically include the state (or the country) an OP is from based on their IP in the event they ignore the rules?

That wouldn't work for some IPs. Mine would show that I'm in MO. At least that what is shows on other boards I've been on that detect my supposed location.

Questions for Msiron

Msiron wrote: These new banner ads that are 728px width and the first page that you must click 'SKIP AD' are way too intrusive. Large banners should be no more that 640px width.

There are many more issues but whoever the admin or webmaster is needs to put allot of time in tweaking this site using products from vbulletin.org

Members with over so many posts should be exempt from ads. I operate 2 large vbulletins and would not be caught doing what is going on here now.

There are rewrite links, small category banners, ads only to members under a certain ct of posts or no posts, and many more plugins which can be applied. Also spammers can be put to rest if you invest some time or hire a webmaster that will.

=====

These are great suggestions and we would like to explore them more. Can you point us to your sites so we can see how you have implemented your recommendations. Also, it would be great to get more details and feedback. Thanks again.

We're planning a larger usability improvement for the forums and welcome suggestions. We'll also post what we are doing before going live to get your feedback. As far as other changes, we are trying a new ad network and look forward to feedback.

I'm running version 3.6.8 (my preference) and I assume your using 3.7 latest version.

You can also include your adsense into posts (I personally don't do this)

Here is a pic of my non invasive small sponsor ads or text, use..... vBSponsors Forum and Category Sponsorship... 2.0.6 for this. If you have any problen lining it up, just holla.

Actually (sorry for the double post) you could incorporate phpadsNEW. I have seen sites with this integrated and it rocks. There are instructions over at vbulletin.org on how to do it, it looked a little complex but I have not throughly read it and I'm not savvy guru.

Apparently you can put any of your advertising right into every so many posts and many different areas of vb (also I think allows advertiser login to track the progress of their own ads)

I will look it over further
openx.org/phpadsnew

here is an integration for it but please look around to find the directions for your version forum
vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=100229&highlight=phpadsnew

The banner prog I use, here is the one for 3.7 +
vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=183335

Have noticed that the forums are taking longer to load than they did prior to upgrades. It seems to be caused by whatever is loading from "optimized-by.rubiconproject.com".

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060728 Firefox/1.5.0.6

This is why it is ESSENTIAL to host everything yourself and not depend on another site to load ads. It can slow a big board like freeadvice down tremendously.

If their server is glitching, it will affect this site.

and to clarify,

NoSpam! NoSpam! allows you to specify a set of... 2.0 [THIS ALLOWS YOU TO SET CERTAIN WORDS LIKE VIAGRA, SEX, IPOD ETC... as spam words] which will go into the mod Que for approval, or auto deletion.

Is Bot Registration Time Check... 1.0.0 ****** GET THIS works great since spammers use sophisticated programs to sign up [THIS WORKS INCREDIBLY as spammers use progs that can sign up a few seconds where a normal person takes more time] it will not allow the spammer to sign up, PERIOD.

I just checked the email I use for forum signups to see who ISBOT blocked from signing up. Look at this, 148 caught within the last 2 weeks. Beautiful, isn't it? Tells me who it blocked along with IP and info.

mallee.biz/images/ISBOTblock.jpg

Restrict URLS - Restricts users from posting URLs until they have x amount of posts or they go into a que. [JUST WHERE YOU WANT THEM, IF THEY USE URL'S as http or www] until they have 3, 5, 50 or 200 posts - you choose the amount via admin panel.

I futher have the follwoing, go to admin ---> vboptions, then to User Banning Options, then paste this into the email section (these are known spam addys)
