Forum Changes

To the FreeAdvice forum community:

Thanks for your postings. As you can see, we’re making some changes on these forums. We apologize for not letting you know before and value your input going forward.

We’ll be experimenting with changes in 3 areas:

1. Usability
• We’re looking at making the forums easier to use for you.
• Look soon for changes to help improve readability, layout and more.
• It would be great to get your ideas about what you currently like and where you would like the usability to improve. We are open for suggestions.

2. Search engine optimization
• The goal is to bring more people to the FreeAdvice forums by making it easier for search engine users to find us. We need as much exposure as we can get.
• Most of the changes shouldn’t be visible to you.

3. Ads
• Currently, we pay the bills for the forums by running Google AdSense.
• We want to experiment and see if we can do better while not negatively affecting your use of the forums.
• We just started last week using a different ad network called AdBrite alongside Google and, in the forthcoming weeks, we will use others.
• Please let us know if the ads are to your liking or raise your hackles.
• We’ve already removed some ads and changed the Full Page Ad to be shown once a day at most (up from once every 6 hours and we are only testing this particular ad format this week or so).
• Our goal is to provide targeted ads that can help you as well. As you can see, some of the ad networks are better at targeting than others.

The bottom line is we’ll be experimenting with a variety of usability, search engine and ad changes to improve the forums for you and us. Please let us know what you think and what ideas you have.

Thanks.

The FreeAdvice Forum Team

Here's something I asked Mary about in the past...

For the forum spammers, is there a way that you can increase the time we can report posts from every minute to sooner? Often times, they post faster than we can report them.

Get this to stop the spamming

I have used it on many vb boards and works great! Free too!

I not aware of a switch to allow users to report more frequently (without opening the door to more frequent spam). We are looking into the patch that Tallrat suggested to reduce spam. That should help reduce the number of automated spammers.

It's not the reporting time. Rather, the forum won't let someone send an "email" more often than every 60 seconds...that's the item you'd need to adjust.

Also, since you're reading this, on replies/posts, etc., can you make the "automatically parse URL's" button default to OFF. This will make replies much cleaner (IMO)

Seconded!!! And thanks for bringing it up, CC. Once I read the part about making suggestions I speed read the rest of it so I could hurry up and post that very thing.

And just my two cents about the ads, I don't mind them. I know that "free" sites are only free to the users. Having to wait an extra second to click away an ad is no big deal if it pays the bills.

We can reduce the Email Flood Check to 30 seconds, but we can't go less than that because it opens the door to spammers abusing the email functions of the board.

The change has been made, but if you're still having an issue, please let us know.

Regarding the parse URL issue. We're getting ready to do several site updates. Including a new version of VBulletin. I'd like to wait until that update is complete before adding this code - just in case the new version handles that function differently.

Since you're open to suggestions:

1) In the Probate section/Personal Representative, please change the Guardian of a Minor to Guardian of a Minor's Estate.

2) Please return the hyperlink.

is there a way to make an easy mobile friendly version? I view other msg boards on my blackberry but this one is more difficult.

crackberry . com uses the same looking board you do and they have a blackberry application that takes me directly to their board, its awesome but i have no idea how much work something like that would be.

Thanks
