| | Am I elegible to get a handgun permit if I have been convicted of 2 misdemeanors? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? North Carolina
About 6 years ago, when I was young and stupid, I was arrested and convicted for Destruction of Public Property after a friend and I decided to open a few fire hydrants. I paid a $300 fine, but did not go to jail. About a year and a half later, I was arrested for Open Container and paid a $100 fine. Both of these occurred in Mississippi, but I currently live in North Carolina.
Since then, I have not been arrested or charged with any crime other than a couple of minor traffic tickets. I am a law abiding citizen, college graduate, and happily married. I would like to purchase a handgun for target shooting and home defense. Will my prior convictions prevent me from getting a handgun permit in North Carolina (Mecklenburg County)? I think I'm ok as long as I haven't been convicted of a felony (I believe both of my convictions are low level misdemeanors) or domestic violence. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? |

| | | The NC pistol permit only is barred based on the Federal law ("felony") or if you have a domestic violence misdemeanor. There are some other bars (being under indictment, court order, insane, drug user, etc...).
The concealed carry permit adds misdemeanors for crimes of violence (assault) and DUI's to the list. PFJ count as convictions for this.

| | | Prayer for Judgement Continued. It's a NC version of deferred adjudication. Essentially, you aren't found guilty pending on you completing a period of probation. If you do, the charge is dismissed. A PFJ for an assault will bar you from a CCW permit just as a conviction would. |

| | | As near as I can tell you are eligible for both the pistol permit and the CCW permit (as far as the criminal record aspects are concerned). | |
