i want to record a conversation i have with a certain person. can i do that without getting his consent? can i get in trouble? thank you.

Depends where the person you are calling is. Illinois is a one party state, if you are both in Illinois (or another one party state) it suffices that one of you knows the recording is being made.

If the one or the other party is in a two party state (CA, CT, DE, FL, MA, MD, MI, MT, NH, PA, WA) then you must have notified both parties the recording is being made.
