My son is 17 and got a girl pregnent. He will not marry her so the mother is going to bring charges. What charges can be made?

If she was below the age of 16, your son is in deep poo-poo. If she was 16 or above, your son has nothing to worry about.

Upon further research of this issue, I had to ask myself - - does the Michigan "Age of Consent" make any sense?

Michigan laws which prohibit certain activities until a set age, such as consent laws, are put in place to protect a minor from being forced to make a potentially dangerous or burdensome decision. Essentially the law is saying, "You don’t even need to decide whether or not this is right for you because you are not old enough to make this decision or to deal adequately with the potential consequences."

Okay, so far, so good.

However, consider this - - Michigan law prohibits minors under 18 from voting, being bound by contracts, purchasing lottery tickets, selling goods to pawnbrokers or donating blood (17), yet sets the age for consent to sexual intercourse at 16. Oddly enough, minors cannot purchase pornographic material, but Michigan allows them to consent to those very same activities which are depicted. If their sexual activity results in a pregnancy they intend to abort, Michigan require them to get parental consent!

Absolutely ridiculous!

Very interesting, but yes -- quite ridiculous. I thought the age of her had something to do with it other than just being considered a "minor". It's been my experience that sometimes the kids engaging in sex at this age know more about the laws on "sexual consent and minors" than do their poor parents!

As the parent of a minor parent, you will also be liable for any child support till your son turns 18. Then he gets to pay it. A cousin of mine had to pay support for his grandchild for over a year till his son turned 18. My cousin was not impressed.

He leaves for the army on Feb. 25. so we have found out he will have legal consel from the military. I think that may help. As far as child support and being a part in the childs life he will do both after a paternity test.
