Court Appointed lawyer denied?

What is the name of your state? North Carolina
My son was in court for contributing to the del. of juvenile. He was denied a court appointed lawyer. He only makes $5000 a year. No reason was given as to why he was denied. He cannot afford a lawyer, what should he do now?

The charge is not serious enough to warrant the taxpayers expense of supplying legal advice.

They told him when he was arrested he could be looking at jail time...how much more serious can it be?

If the charge is a misdeamenor (IE disorderly persons type offense) than you are on your own.
