Not enough information to answer.

Violation from whom? Are you old enough to drink? If you are the tenant does your lease contain any prohibitions against it? Are you asking about an occasional drink or intoxication?

Yes, you can consume alcohol on your rented residential property and not break the law. You MAY violate some terms of your rental contract, but, it wouldn't be against the law, in and of itself.

If he's not 21, it's illegal to drink. There's no safe haven just because he in his home or other private property.

Well, there are exceptions in CA to drinking on one's own property even for someone who us underage. So, even if under 21, if the OP is indoors, drinking on their own, their consumption MAY be legal.

But, having a party, allowing others to drink who are underage, etc., can all be problematic for the OP.
