While downloading videos of children movies I downloaded some child porn. I've since found out that cartoon characters are a popular way for pornographers to attract children and subsequently contact them.
I've deleted the porn and emptied my trash can. Reading news stories about collectors of this stuff having their computers confiscated and criminally charged has left me scared to death. Having my family think this of me is worse than the thought of a criminal conviction.
I'll completely erase my whole hard drive if I have to but would lose or have to back-up a whale load of stuff. This technology stuff has me baffled most of the time.
Can this stuff or traces of it be found through the video sharing site called Limewire or similar places, also called peer to peer sharing?What is the name of your state?

yes, turn yourself in. The police will be happy to ascertain if what you are downloading was by accident or on purpose. That is quite practical I think. Funny, I spend about 15 hours a day on the computer, and I have never once accidentally downloaded kiddie porn.

Carl gave you a practical answer. Search the porn webs for the answers you want to hear. Downloading Disney movies, is not going to down load kiddie porn on your computer.

And guess what else. I went to college within the last five years. I have seen p2p work. You search for a Film title, you see the title the people put on the film...

What Your friends think we're downloading, expecting to be getting a Scorsese classic when you download "RAGING BULL".... Well its not like there was anything to clue you in other than the title... So your mighty surprised when its gay porn.

Basically, from experience and knowledge of how much malevolence there is on the internet... I sincerely believe someone could download a movie over p2p with a disney title then could wind up with kiddie porn.

PS - the uploader puts the title on the file...

I am not a computer expert by any means. While I lived the computer revolution and had some knowledge many, many years ago, my current knowledge is not complete. My understanding is that the government can pretty much get ahold of any internet record. And, the internet records everything. The current debate is the federal government trying to make it required that ISPs maintain records for a certain length of time. (I think the current proposal is two years, but it could be longer.) What this means there is a record of any requests sent and any files downloaded from a particular IP address for a certain length of time totally outside of the user's control.

Data on a hard drive has a certain permanence to those with time and sophisticated tools. (Like the police.) The Department of Defense has a standard of overwriting any data 7 times with varying, random, seeds in order to consder data "erased". There are software programs available on the internet which will do this. Even then, the computer press is unsure if low-level, mechanical reading devices (ones where the hard drive is removed and the platter(s) themselves are put into a machine) wouldn't be able to read the data well enough to reconstruct files to some extent. It is theoretically possible that a historical "map" of all the bits could be made, no matter how many times a disk is re-written.

However, resources are limited. Unmounting drives in sealed rooms and using the expertise of technicians to restore and understand data in this way can be expensive. In the real world, a person who downloaded a single file of kiddie porn from a non-dedicated website would not be subject to such an expensive discovery process. Even the pure software tools in the hands of or available to most police agencies, there is a limited amount of time available for their use (because of limted technical resources and the process that must be maintained to keep a chain of custody) and such extensive searches are unlikely for a single or accidental access to illegal material.

If what you said was true, I wouldn't worry too much about it after you perform the plan you mentioned. If you were searching for such things or otherwise have an internet record of such searches, you may have problems if the extent of the search becomes noticable to the authorities for some reason. Eating donuts and drinking coffee while whistling at all the little girlies who walk by take up a lot of time and the police can't go after everyone. If it was a mistake, go forth and sin no more. If not, unplug the computer and seek the help of a professional.

Your computer is NEVER clear of everythng you download so your answer is NO its still there anda computer expert could find it! I will add that first off downloading of movies is not legal itslef and I find it difficult to believe you "accidentally" downloaded child porn! I do know that many users rename thier files. so you could have downloaded it however teh smart thing to do is preview what you download before download is complete and read the little pop up that shows what file is etc!

Yep! It makes my job so much easier!

Fortunately, only the really serious, intelligent, and savvy pervs have the good stuff that can really get rid of everything ... even then it takes attention to detail.

To Orangecounty, I didn't suggest any particular process or software because I do not wish to aid and abet porn peddlers that might stumble onto this thread from finding ways to get rid of all traces of the stuff.

There are several comercial products on the market designed to sweep everything clean. I'm not sure how well they would work...

To be safe backing up all your files to CD's and then deleting everything, formatting the hard-drive and then reloading windows etc. should do the trick.

If you are really paranoid destroy the hard-drive and throw it out and get a new one for the machine.

Do it yourself to be totally secure.

I think it is sad how totally uniformed some of the posters here are about P2P networks and the internet in general. It is fairly easy to download a file named princess_diaries.wmv or some other seemingly harmless name and find it to be a potential porn clip with an actor under the age of 18 yrs.

Carl does not want to tell you how to remove your senstive information because he knows this is how criminals get peoples passwords, financial information, etc. and he wants to make sure and keep the criminals in business.
