Introducing a witness

What is the name of your state? New York
The following is the scenario:

[*]The trial is in progress
[*]The first two days of trial are over
[*]during this period the prosecution has presented and is now resting
[*]the defense has started by presenting one witness
[*]subsequent to this the trial has been adjourned for a week

Is the defense attorney, at this stage, allowed to subpoena and present a new witness who has never been mentioned prior to the starting of trial, when the trial recommences?

Type of Trial: Criminal Misdemeanor

Jurisdiction: Queens County, NY

And, no I havent been able to reach my lawyer, and hence my posting and request in this forum. Would appreciate your suggestions/expert guidance
