I have a question regarding federal obscenity charges. I know that it is illegal to advertise, promote, or solicit certain kinds of obscenity, even if it is not illegal to simply possess that obscenity. Now, my question, what constitutes "promoting" obscenity? As in, would just registering on a website that provides such obscenity count as "promoting" it in the legal sense, even if you never post anything or take part in the website? I am wondering because I have noticed many kinds of sites dedicated to obscene material that people can register on, and I was wondering if such people could be charged simply for that.

Before going on any further, what do you think the legal definition of "obscenity" is. It's not what most people think it is. Disgusting (but legal) porn is not obscene.
