What is the name of your state? MA

hi i need some advice guys. i was pulled over by an officer while driving someone else car and came to find out that the vehicle had no insurance and that the registration is revoked. the officer gave me a citation stating operationg vehicle with revoke registration and no insurance (allow). he made me sign citation as violator's agent, so i did. he told me to make sure violator (owner of car knows), so i called him right away and notified him of what happen and told him officer said he will get a letter for court date. i have been talking to violator and he said he don't remember seeing a letter with a court date. odd, then i recieve a citation 1 month later, stating that i am the violator now and those charges are now against me. what is going on?

What is the staute number of the offense?

Also, it sounds like you have gotten a ticket for operating the vehicle w/o all that stuff. The owner may also have a ticket for not getting registration and insurance.

Even if the owner had insurance, you have to be insured also. As in have your own policy or be listed as a driver on the owners policy.

That's not true. You don't have to carry car insurance if you don't own a car, and you are not responsible for your friend's failure to register his car. Show up for the court date and explain what happened.

Who told you this?

thanx for replying guys. for the records there was no accident. 2 citations were given. 1) which is giving at scene, the citation is (ALLOWING) driving without insurance and registration and in this case i was the violator's agent, the owner is the violator. i followed the officer instructions to notify owner and i did just that. 2) a 2nd citation was mailed to me stating i was driving w/o insurance and revoke registration. so in this case i am the violator. a court date has been mailed to me but i don't think the owner of car got it. can someone explain to me what will happen in court?

Standard answer

Here are some hints on appearing in court:

Dress professionally in clean clothes.

Do not wear message shirts.

Don't chew gum, smoke, or eat.

Bathe and wash your hair.

Go to court beforehand some day before you actually have to go to watch how things go.

Speak politely and deferentially. If you argue or dispute something, do it professionally and without emotion.

Ask the court clerk who you talk to about a diversion (meaning you want to plead to a different, lesser charge), if applicable in your situation.

Here are five stories that criminal court judges hear the most (and I suggest you do not use them or variations of them):

1. I’ve been saved! (This is not religion specific; folks from all kinds of religious backgrounds use this one.)

2. My girlfriend/mother/sister/daughter is pregnant/sick/dying/dead/crippled and needs my help.

3. I’ve got a job in [name a state five hundred miles away].

4. This is the first time I ever did this.

5. You’ve got the wrong guy. (A variation of this one is the phantom defendant story: “It wasn’t me driving, it was a hitchhiker I picked up. He wrecked the car, drug me behind the wheel then took off.”)
