My 19 year old son was stopped this past weekend and issued a ticket for possession of alchohol by a minor. He was only a passenger in this car, not the driver. He appeared in court, yesterday, and had his case continued to early next month. He was told that he could lose his driver's license for up to 150 days plus pay a fine of up to $200. This seems quite excessive given the fact that he was a passenger and not the driver. None of the occupants of the vehicle were tested for intoxication, nor were there any other traffic violations cited. They were stopped fairly late at night, seemingly at random for no discernable reason. We live in Connecticut. Is this correct - that he could lose his license for this length of time, even though he was not operating the vehicle, had not violated any traffic laws, and was not intoxicated?

You stated that your son was cited for possession, not DWI. Operating the vehicle has nothing to do with whether or not he illegally possessed alcohol.

Some states CAN suspend a person's license for underage possession of alcohol or even tobacco.
