Ok, I really messed up. While working away from home on a job in California, being alone night after night, the darker side of my curiosity got the better of me when a person in a chatroom send me a short video of a young girl having sex. I became curious and inquired about purchasing some kiddie-porn tapes from some ads in a newsgroup. It was a sting operation that I fell for. I had also downloaded some video images from a peer-2-peer file sharing program so I had maybe 10 video clips on my pc as well.
When I took possession of the tapes the feds moved in immediately, questioned me for a couple of hours, confiscated all my computer equipment and left saying the would let me know. I was up front and honest about what I had done and told them everything. The Postal Inspector called me a few times to clearify some questions she had and I told her whatever she wanted. She later informed me a week later that they were going to indicte me but it would be a few months for them to complete their investigation and get the federal indictement. I've hired an attorney to represent me.
I've never been so ashamed and so scared. Never really had any runins with the law except for a mistermeanor when I was in my early 20's for carrying a concealed handgun and eventually pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace.
I've always though of myself as a good person and not a pedophile but I guess I'm considered one now.
Anyhow, I'm not sure what I'm facing. I'm scared to death of any prison sentence since I'm now 50 and not in all that great of health.
I'm considering fleeing to another country. I'd rather die a free man than in prison somewhere. Assuming I flee and start a new life somewhere else, and don't mess up again like I did (Believe me, I'm not going to do that again). While the feds be able to get the host country to extridate me even if I haven't broken any laws there?
What if I go to a country that has no extridation treaty with the U.S.?
