What is the name of your state? AL
If a house is broken into and of the items taken was a DVD player with a rented DVD in it, is the homeowner still responsible for the charges on said DVD?

Generally, yes. Pay the company for the DVD - it can't be that expensive.

If all that was required was to say a DVD was stolen so you didn't have to pay for it, everyone would be doing it and the video rental industry would have gone away a long time ago.

I know people that are still making payments on their stolen automobiles because they carelessly decided they did not need to fully insure it while still paying on it!

Nothing like paying a few hundred dollars each month on a car you no longer have!
