What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IL

I stole an ex-girlfriends jewelry. She has not noticed it missing yet. I felt bad about what I did so I returned it to her house and left it on her porch where she will find it in the morning.

She cannot prove for sure I stole the items. If I returned everything is this still considered a crime?

If the police can develop proof of the theft, yes, you can be charged even though you have returned the money.
