What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia.
I was caught for shoplifting at Kroger about two weeks ago. The total came to $7.01.
Security guards took me to the security room and did the following:
• Took my name and information
• Photocopied my license
• Banned me from all Kroger property
• Had me sign a civil demand notice (though so far I have not received a letter.)
• Escorted me out of the store, and told me I was lucky and that they "wouldn't press charges." I have not heard from them since.
I do not know what this means. Has this gone on my record? Have I been officially convicted of a misdemeanor? I am particularly concerned about how this will affect my job applications. (If it is not on my record, I don't want to admit to this and look horrible- but of course, if it is, I have to.)
ALSO: I was too intimidated and scared to ask questions at the time. The main guard had a badge and handcuffs, and one definitely was called in from elsewhere- but no one wore a uniform, and I am not clear whether or not police were involved. Do you think calling to clarify the situation would be informative, or do you think it would reopen the can of worms and incite Kroger to take actions they would have otherwise left alone?
I would just like to know what you think.
The big question is, DO I HAVE A RECORD? Am I a marked woman?!
