We have had trouble with trespassing by people that live across the street. It is the minors in the house. They are early to mid teens. They consistently cross the street & come into our yard & use it as their own. There has never been an invitation to them to come onto our property. A year ago, we instructed them off the property & spoke to the parent who acted like "what's the problem". Over the past year there has been several incidents where they have come into the yard & we have waived them off. Over the weekend two of the teens, after dark, came into our yard & were doing cartwheels. Then they proceeded further into the yard close to the house & laid down in the yard & stayed there. We went outside & instructed them off the property & asked to speak to the parent. The parent came out & was confrontational & stating they had a right to go wherever they wanted & they had a right to access our property. We informed them it was private property & they were trespassing. They continued to deny they were in the wrong & would not commit to staying off our property. We notified the police, to get it on the record, of the issue & the police spoke to them about the trespassing. We have now posted "no trespassing signs". We are going to send a certified letter for documentation to state they are not to trespass anymore.
They have not yet come back into the yard, however, now it seems they are moving into a harrasment mode. They stand on their property and make obscene gestures, curse us, & make gestures like "let's fight".
Any advice to offer?
How should we handle the harrasment by the teens if it persists? This makes it trickier since it is minors.
Also, they play baketball in the street & their ball frequently rolls into our yard. Due to theor past behavior we are stating in our letter they are not to enter our yard to even to retrieve the ball. Is it ok to say that if the ball comes in the yard they can not retrieve it and that it is no longer theirs?
Thank you.
