Social Security Card - number on the back?

I just have one very general question - (I hope this is an appropriate forum to ask this - if not so sorry!)
Can anyone tell me what the number on the back of the Social Security Card is for? It is an 8-digit alpha-numeric stamped number at the bottom right hand side on the reverse side of the card. Thank You for any replies...
