Did the doctor cause him to fall or is that just where he happened to be when he fell?

First of all, I am sorry for your loss. How old was your father? Did he walk unassisted or did he use a cane? Was there something he slipped on? Please provide more details.

My father was 82. He was stepping off the scale. The medical assistant was right next to him. He walked unassisted.

The medical assistant should have helped him on and off the scale. He was 82 years old and alittle unsteady on his feet.

They might have been helping him and he might have still fallen. Were you present in the room with them when it happened? Sometimes unfortunate accidents happen and they're not due to anyone's negligence.

And, importantly, did the fall cause/contribute to his death?

More then likely, the surgery which was needed due to the fall is what led to the death. Unless of course it was something like, the patient had a stroke or a heart attack and THAT caused the fall, as well as weakening the body, which caused him to be unable to survive the needed surgery. At that age, there are likely a lot of confounding health issues going on. Patient could have fallen anywhere, and had the same outcome. Statistically, a doctor's office is the best possible place to have something like this happen.
