A friend of mines rented a room in a single family home that was converted so each room was rented out to different people. There were over 10 people living in the two story house with about 6 bedrooms (living room and garage was converted). The home owner does not live there and no one was watching the house. The front doors were sometimes left unlocked. Each room had doors with regular door knobs with locks that could be opened with a credit card. The home owner does not run background checks on the renters that were living there, and one of the renters had a history of domestic violence and was on probation. There were also drugs found on that person's room. That home owner caused the death of my friend who was a renter there. Could her parents sue the owner of the house. I am mad because the home owner did not put in the effort to ensure that the renters were safe.

Sorry there was not much details provided. It is still hard to go into deep details regarding this situation and it took me a lot to ask this question.

In fact, you are so astonishingly correct in this matter, it will not surprise us one bit if you are offered a generous settlement, because, by golly, that’s just how it should be.

Was the other renter charged with murder? I highly doubt the land lord is responsible for anything.

thanks for the response, and yes he was charged. I just believe that it was his responsibly to ensure the safety of the renters by running background checks and adding security.

Sorry for the loss of your friend, but there really is no legal recourse here. The landlord is under no obligation to provide "added security" or to perform background checks.
