Divorce Papers?

I live in the state of Virginia, but my question pertains to the state of Georgia. Recently my ex-husband died tragically in the state of Georgia and from what I understand, his family is filing a wrongful death lawsuit. This lawyer is looking for a copy of our divorce papers. We have been divorced for a few years and I know that divorce papers are public record. Why would our divorce papers be necessary? What would they have to do with their law suit? I would appreciate any information you might be able to pass along. Thanks very much

Ask the attorney this question. We have no idea.

O.K. at the risk of pulling teeth, did your divorce decree have any mention of life insurance and if so, what exactly was the wording?

No, the divorce was very simple and mentioned nothing of life insurance. It was a very simple divorce, with me going back to my maiden name. We had no property or accounts to split.

Then if you have a copy of the decree send it to them. If not, then write the attorney a very nice letter informing them that it is not your place to do their work for them nor do you have the time to do so.

if you don't have a copy and you intend to write them informing them to do their own work, you might want to tell them where the divorce took place.

My cynical side says if the decree is that simple, his family/lawyer only wants it to make sure that you don't try to "weasel" yourself into the wrongful death lawsuit. Tell them you charge $350/hr. for your time to do their investigation for them, that ought to stop the requests.
