Question

I'm 21 and a ceiling collapsed on me

I live in Chicago and we had a roofer fix our roof but he didn't fix it right. Because of that various leaks came up throughout our house. In my room there were two leaks - one from my light fixture and another one by my window. We called him for weeks to have him come by to look at my ceiling - he finally came apologized and left. Two days later I woke up to the ceiling collapsing on me in bed. As the ceiling covered me I was hit multiple times on my head, back and body resulting in head and back problems. The house is old and the ceiling was made out of a cement mixture. Now when you walk in my room you can see the attic ceiling.

I was sent to the ER in an ambulance and had CAT scan, neck and body scans. After they saw the pictures, they said that it should have been worse. Luckily for me nothing was broken, however, it’s been 4 months and I have neck pain and back pain. I use to be very active, but now I can't really stand for too long or lift anything heavy. I've been to the doctor and she told me that I may have to deal with this for months, years or for the rest of my life.

His insurance company wants to settle everything out of court especially pain and suffering. They want to offer me 15,000 and my medical bills are 6 to 7,000. I’m only 21 and I don't know if I’m getting a good deal or not. HelpWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Did you actually get a final diagnosis from your doctor?

(this might help)

Don't agree to anything without consulting with a personal injury attorney. Call a few of them and stay away from the ones you see advertise on TV.

Most importantly - if you are still treating, you should not even be THINKING about settling. You are young and there is a very good chance you will make a full or close to full recovery, but you will not know what your final outcome will be until your treatment is complete.

don't take too long to decide though. There is a statute of limitations to file suit, if you end up going that route.

I believe that is 2 years in Illinois.

I've been going to check ups with my doctor for the past four months and the pain has lessened but I still have the lower back pain and neck problems (like stiffness). I explained it to my doctor but she said that with an injury like this she can't really tell me when these problems may go away. She said that it could be a few months or even years (she was kind of vague). she told me to just keep taking motrin to lessen the pain and keep checking back with her.

I agree with you BlondiePB - I think I may have to consult a personal injury attorney because they will definitely know how to deal with talking with an insurance company on settlements and also laws concerning cases like this. Thank you for your help!

Your doctor is....clueless. If you were going to get better on your own, you'd be there by now, at this point he should be referring you for physical therapy or chiropractic care or something other then "wait and see".

I think the best idea is for me to probably seek a second opinion from a different doctor. I think that would be the wisest thing for me to do. Thank you ecmst12.
