Injured in Assault

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

I was assaulted by a group of individuals and suffered multiple injuries. I have pressed charges and have been asked to appear in court as a witness during the other parties plea. Do I have to attend?

More importantly, I plan on sending a demand letter myself for injury compensation to one of the people as I only have one name and he is the only suspect on the report. I have proof of cost, ER bills, dental bills, etc. Does this sound like a good idea without a lawyer or not? Also any advice on what the letter should contain, how I should protect myself, etc.?

Thanks for any replies.

If you want the person to be convicted, it's a good idea to appear when asked to.

What makes you think he has any money?

I actually would rather handle this as a civil matter and drop charges. then I found out I cant. I just dont want to be the one in contempt of court or something.

I am not sure if he has money but a civil lawsuit and lawyer will be more than I will be demanding. Are you saying its better to not handle it his way?

I'm saying you can't get money from someone who doesn't have any. There may be a crime victim's fund in your state or city. Or you could ask the judge in the criminal trial to make restitution a part of his sentence.
