Landlord liability?NY My landlord/ building manager has not done anything about the sheets of ice in the parking lot of my building, nor the ice on the sidewalk that leads from my door to the lot, which is adjacent to the multi-family house. It's been present & hazardous for about a week and a half. I slipped on it and ripped up my knee this morning, leading to a tetanus shot. What are my landlord's responsibilities? |

| You've known about the ice for a WEEK and didn't take care to avoid falling?

| There is likely no law that requires the landlord to remove the ice. As a tenant, you also have an obligation to mitigate any potential hazards yourself. This could have been done by removing the hazard yourself or wearing appropriate footwear made for walking on slippery surfaces.

| Could I have some serious responses please instead of attitude? I just want to know whether or not my landlord is responsible for anything or not. I find it hard to believe that he is obliged to remove snow but not ice. |

| My response WAS serious...you are the one with the attitude

| Google "open and obvious" and "assumption of risk" to get your questioned answered.

| Had you called your landlord and told him about the ice? Did you buy a bag of rock salt and toss some on the sidewalk? Snow removal is required per local ordinances in most places that get snow regularly. That the landlord is responsible for snow removal means ONLY that if it doesn't get done, HE gets the citation for it, not the tenants. It has nothing to do with the safety of the tenants and if you injured yourself due to the snow not being removed that wouldn't be his responsibility either. |
