Utility Subcontractor floods basement with sewage

Subcontractor to telephone company is denying fault in causing flooding of sewage in my basement. They are putting conduit in for fibre to the premise. 2.5 feet of rock and soil appeared down a manhole along the trench into the sewer system and they are denying any responsibility. I want replacement value and punitive damages for being in sewage for 10 plus hours.
