volunteer clarification

What is the name of your state?What is the name of your state? NC
My wife fell 20 ft off a roof volunteering for a non-profit while constructing a house. Bills are piling up and the non-profit has filed a claim with their insurance, however the insurance is questioning liability and will most likely deny the claim. WC would often apply but how does it (if at all) in the case of an inexperienced volunteer?
Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.
