What is a mechanic liable for?

What is the name of your state? Illinois

My oil filter fell off my automobile the same day I got it professionally changed. It was due to the wrong filter being put on by a mechanic (due to my own research since I found the filter in my driveway). The engine smoked and shutdown. Luckily it still seems to run but two other mechanics said that most likely there is internal damage. The manager refused to take responsibility and has offered no assistance in this matter let along give me the time of day. I have a 200 ft driveway that has oil all over it, my engine department with oil all over, possible engine damage and of course I paid $22 for the oil change.

I can see where this is going - to court. I'm trying to get the owners name and number but not sure the manager will give that to me by the way he is treating me.

Since he will not give me the time of day I cannot communicate my demands which I believe are not unreasonable:

1) Professional cleaning of my driveway that I share with my neighbor.
2) Professional cleaning of my engine department
3) A Refund
4) Pay for an independent mechanic to inspect my engine and pay for any damage related to this.

If he continues to ignore me and I am forced to take the company to court is there more damages the company is liable for? What is the name of your state?

The shop has insurance for these things. Send a letter to the owner (you don't need his name) via certified mail explaining the situation and requesting the insurance information so you can file a claim. You most likely will need a new engine.

Unless the internal damages involved bleeding inside your body, this is the wrong forum to post in.

Sorry

I couldn't find the right forum. But I did stub my toe on my tire as I screamed in disbelief.
