I want to add my girlfriend to the deed on our house. Because of poor credit, she was not added on the mortgage initially. We both want to be on the deed - we plan on refinancing later when her credit is better. My question is if I use a quit claim deed, do I put my name as grantor and both of our names as grantee? Also will we have to pay a gift tax because we added her on? Would we avoid any taxes if we wait until we get married (no date in the near future)? |
My response:
Are you nuts?
Do not add anyone else's name to the deed. You should read some of the posts we get about your type of situation, and what happens when there's a breakup. You would have to be completely bonkers to add her name.
Rather, see an attorney to have a "Live-Together" (Cohabitation)contract written and signed.
