Backing out of Sales Contract

My wife and I signed a contact to buy a home in AL. It was a For Sale By Owner. Neither party had any real experience with this. We all agreed to the terms, no contigencies. We did not give any earnest money. The seller was ok with that too. Only the husband (seller) signed the contract, wife was not home at the time. We since decided this was not the house for us, we called and told the husband we were backing out of the deal. he called today and wants me to "pay him something" for his time and loss of this deal not closing. Does he have any legal recourse.

It completely depends on what the contract stipulates and since we don't have a copy of the contract, how can we offer a legitimate opinion?
