3 days ago, I came home to my apartment with a notic in the door, saying that we will no longe be allowed to have Charcoal Barbecues or Hibachis and that tehy are to be removed in 30 days. Propane bbq's will only be allowed. This really upsets me, because I pay good rent to live there and I am a good tenant, I don't want to be told what I can and cannot own after 2 yrs of living there. Is this legal for them to do?

Absolutely incredible. There are people on this site with real, and volatile problems, and you're asking about barbecues?

Rules change. Don't like it? Move.

I'm not a lawyer, but to my knowledge, if it wasn't in the original rental contract, they can't enforce it. Check with your states rental agreement laws.

I apologize for offending you with my "unimportant" question. This is a free advice website, isn't it? I never said that my problem was more important than anyone else's. I just asked for "advice". Thank you for your kindness and words of wisdom.

Most states allow L to promulgate written rules affecting all tenants. These rules can be changed on 30 days' notice.

It might not even be the landlord's decision. Fire codes in many cities and counties do not allow open flame barbeques on apartment/condo balconies. The landlord might be merely conforming to existing (or newly enacted) fire codes.

If the property is a condominum project the House Rules do not allow any cooking via BBQ, hibachis, propane grills etc. in the limited common areas.
