i am new to u.s. and don't know all laws. due to many problems, illness, job layoff, i can't pay my property taxes this year. when i talk to county people they say i must pay by dec 31. what happens if i can't? do i lose my house or can i still pay later?

Don't sleep yet.
First find out the applicable law, as in most areas, the county is entitled by law to foreclose due to unpaid property taxes for a period of 2-3 years.
