Condo Lien for Assoc. Fees

I am not on good terms with my Board have paid fees late. Their lawyer has sent letter to me stating that they have a lien on my condo for balances I don't agree with. I'm confused since finding this site I've been reading alot of the threads and from what I understand they would have to go to court and get a judgement in order to place a lien. Is this correct?? If so they have been lying to me all along since I have believed them.

Could anyone tell me if my understanding is correct about what I've read regarding liens?

Depending on State law, the HOA could file a lien without a court hearing.
