Conflict with a Public Utility

What is the name of your state? Washingotn

The FACTS:

Built a new home in 2002. Use gas for heating, water and fireplace.

Up to 2005, we received normal fluctuating statements depending on time of year, usage, # of people at home. Mid-year the statements began coming in at the same figure each month. We continued to make timely payments.

Recently, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) sent a meter inspector out to check our home and found the meter needed replacing. We have now received a HUGE bill from PSE advising we were responsible for the "estimated" usage they did not capture. They have admitted fault in this situation but are expecting us make payment on their best guess what we should owe.

First, are we liable for their mistake? What remedy can you recommend?

If you are asking if you have to pay for electricity you used, the answer is yes.

what mistake? There was an equipment failure and they, presumably, are using previous usage to estimate what they did not bill you for.

If you can prove you were overseas and the house was empty, contest the billing. If you were occupying the house, pay the bill.
