| Last August 1, a friend asked us if he could store several items in our garage for a "couple of weeks". My husband explained that we store boats for the winter and he had to remove his "stuff" by Oct. 1. He said, "no problem". Well, we have not seen or heard from his since. We tried to locate him, but to no avail. We would like to get this stuff out of our garage, because we need the room. Can we legally dispose of this? |

| Here's the NY abandoned property law. http://assembly.state.ny.us/cgi-bin/claws?law=83&art=6 Turn the property over to police & demand that they reimburse you for storage out of the sales proceeds & send you any excess money that the owner doesn't claim. If the cops refuse to take the stuff, get their refusal in writing & sell it in a garage sale. Keep a record of how much you make, what the ad cost, & how much you're charging for storage. ------------------ This is not legal advice and you are not my client. Double check everything with your own attorney and your state's laws. |
