Question

Recently me and and friend of mine have decided to start up a door to door trash pickup service for apartment complexes. We will be charging the tenants directly and then will be paying a % to the apartment manager. Besides all the forms and IRS stuff to fill out, can any think of any other legality issues that may prevent this business from working?

Note: this is not trash talk.
What kind of insurance will you carry and how will you collect and dispose of all the trash. What are the limitations of the trash ie. normal everyday use, bulky items, environmental hazards, building supplies, glass, etc. Will all the employees be bonded and insured due to the possibility of entering secured buildings. What if a trash bag breaks and stains the hallway carpet: who is responsible for the carpet cleaning bill? Is there a mandatory recycling ordinance or law that must be followed concerning paper, plastic, glass and aluminum? What would the private refuse companies have to say about your business?

Thumbs up

thanks for the quick reply

The insurance I am not exactly sure of at the moment. So far it will only be me and a friend providing the service.. there will not be any hiring of employees for quite a while. The collection of trash would be provided for 3 days of the week. The tenants would place trash outside there doorway and we would bring it to the trash compactor or where ever the trash is supposed to be brought. This type of business would really only work in a apartment complex where the trash area is out of the way to bring it to. At this moment we believe there will be no limitations to what the tenants can leave for us to pickup and bring. But never will we go inside someones apartment to bring out trash. Because we would only be working inside an apartment complex, i believe there wouldn't be any problem with and recycling ordinances or private refuse companies.

Thanks for any help.
I tried to answer your questions in the order you had asked them above.

Investigate your state's garbage control laws carefully. You may need a special license, EPA inpact statements, etc. Also, it may be illegal for you to collect garbage. Some cities have exclusive contracts with a certain company & no one in the city can use anyone else.

This is not legal advice and you are not my client. Double check everything with your own attorney and your state's laws.
