Easements

i live in n. manchester, indiana. recently the city planted 3 trees in my yard. i was never notified. when i called about them i was told that they were from a grant and that the city has the right to come on my property and plant these trees because of a easement.
my question is how far are they allowed to come in my yard? and was it legal to do this without notifing us other than as a public notice in the paper?
