Question

After reading some of the posts on this board and seeing what landlords are liable for, it reminded me of something that happened about two years ago. I know it must be too late to do anything about it now, but was wondering if I let myself get ripped.

My wife and I were renting an apt. During a rain storm, I noticed the roof was leaking. The next morning I notified the property manager and a couple of days later, there was some men working on the roof. About a week later it rained again, and again the roof leaked. Again, I notified the PM. I didnt see anyone come out to work on it. Now it was Summer and in Florida, it is the rainy season. We started getting lots of rain and the leak got worse and worse. I made another call to the PM, but it was as if they didnt care. Eventually the ceiling fell in and made a big mess. This time when I called the PM, she came out and told me we can't live there. The apt was available next door, and my wife and I spent the weekend moving in. The apt we moved into was roach infested and had alot ofproblems that the previous apt didnt have, but at least the roof didnt leak. Anyway, I asked for a month's rent free and that they pay for some of the items that had been damaged by the ceiling caving in. They countered with half of month's rent and pay for the items. Not knowing any better, I accepted and signed something saying I wont sue them. So, did I make a BIG goof, by not pushing the issue, or is half a month's rent (about $300) fair?

No you should have gotten your rent free for at least a month PLUS all the extra connection costs to move the phone cable etc.

At least you didnt have a landlord that threw you out on the street because of their incompetence, so that is a big plus.

They should have sent in the exterminators before you even moved in the apt. , becuase of the water damage in this apt.....

But you should have gotten renters insurance, to cover any and all of your losses....go see if there is a Travelers in your area, I pay less then $20 a month for $44,000 contents and $100,000 liabilty in New York City.so your should be cheaper.
