I have filed a claim for roof and wall damage to my home from a leaking roof with my insurance company. only claim in over 20 years. They paid the estimated amount, after including my mortgage company sign off on the repair check. Now the bank wants any cash left over to go toward my mortgage. I am current with my mortgage,so why couldnt I keep any left over if I can get the job done cheaper or done myself?

Review the NOTE. It may have specific language concerning this matter. If it doesn't speak specifically about this, then it seems like you would have the right to decide for yourself how the funds are to be used.
