land right of way

i have three acres of land my wife and i have owned for 10 years in north carolina, there hasn't been a home on property forapproximately 6 years. we allways had access from an existing roadbed that run thru her parents property, they also use this roadbed as their driveway.since we moved from the property we have no contact with them.they have blocked our driveway denying us access to our property,we have right of way rights on the otherside of our property, but it would cost an extreme amount of money to build a road into this property.can they legally block our drive or is protected by grandfather clauses, since the driveway is part of an existing roadbed that has been there for years and years.any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated,we have tried to find information on this but have been unsucessful thank you, leslie&tamela
