new york state/ we sold our home in new york last oct. and used a lawyer for the closing. instead of him deducting over $500 from our profit for 3 months property taxes we knew we owed the buyer, he credited us over $1200 on the hud settlement statement instead. we were not at the closing. he admitted to the mistake just yesterday in a letter to us, and he now expects us to reimburse the buyer the $1700 plus interest ($190) which has accrued since the closing last oct., does he have any liabilty in this, shouldn't he a least be liable for the interest on the $1700 since he alone made the error? we gave him all our tax bills and he knew up front what we owed. would we be within our rights to get the fee we paid him to represent us at the closing refunded for bogus representation? is there any legal recourse? please advise.

Yes, the attorney made the error so make him pay for all of it or part of it.
If he gives you grief, file a complaint with the State licensing office, Bar Association and his errors and ommissions insurance carrier.
