I was wondering if it i legal to rent out a room in my home to someone. I live in a residential neighborhood and was thinking of renting a room to someone but someone said it might be illegal.

unless there are restrictions placed in the title of the home most citys have allready addressed the issue by writting ordinances spelling out how many people can live in one unit that are not related before a rooming house lic is required . so thats what you need to ask your citys zoning dept .
