What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Md.

Hello,
Can a life estate holder forego paying taxes on the property forcing a county tax lien sale and then legally buy the property back at the auction and become the sole owner of said property?
(I understand this is if the remainderman does not want to pay the taxes to redeem the land.)

The property is a large parcel and has been paid off for years. There is no mortgage involved. Just taxes.

No they can't IF the remainderman looks out for their own interests and makes certain the property taxes ARE paid. Once they have redeemed out of tax sale, they cam take legal action against the party that defaulted on the taxes. This is really not very different than the mortgage holder redeeming from tax sale if their non-escrowed borrower is in tax default. They first look out to protect their interests, then take action after.
