Lose ownership of land

What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Vermont
I have two possibly related questions:
- Is there a way for someone to take or claim land because they have used it for 7 years (or some other period of time)?
- Along with that, my father-in-law let his brother stay in a house of his with the condition he keep it maintained. After 8 years my father-in-law tried to get his brother out of the house. The brother contacted a lawyer and somehow they "settled" by my father-in-law giving his brother land. Can you shed any light on how my father-in-law would be forced to do this? (Note: My father-in-law has died so I can not ask him what happened.)
Thank you.

follow-up info.

That is as much information as the brother would give us. We are not on the best of terms with him. That is why I was trying to get more information here.

**A: well, we certainly can't tell you since we are not the brother.
