Unhappy

as per my previous postings, i am a master tenant in san francisco and yesterday had the hard conversation with my subtenant that it's not working out and i would like him to move. i'll spare all the details, suffice it to say it's really traumatic. verbal agreements have been broken (by me) that were vague and meant one thing to him and another to me. i think i'm right in that verbal agreements are not binding, right?
now he has stopped payment on his august rent check in order to force me into a discussion where he wants me to "take responsibility" for breaking our agreement (that everyone had equal status in the house.)
when i asked him to leave i offered him 2-3 months time and some $ for moving expenses.
apparently that's not enough. i plan to call my local rent board in the morning but i would love any advice offered here. i think i'm hoping that he goes past the 5th not paying rent and i can legally evict him. until then do i have to watch myself/ what i say? tonight he demanded my offer of time & $ in writing which i think is not wise for me to do.
HELP
and thanks for the advice so far, it's been really great to have someone respond. it's pretty lonely in this position.

My response:

If your State laws allow it, tell him:

"What offer? The only thing you'll be getting in writing is an official 3-Day Notice to Pay Rent or Quit."

Then, when he fails to pay, sue him for Unlawful Detainer. If I knew your State, I could give you better specifics.
