Unhappy

I got a letter dated July 31st from my landlord stating that my rent is increasing 400.00 permonth because my sister is staying with me for the month of August. I have gone over my lease and it never says how long a guest can stay over. The landlord said that increase is due to additional wear and tear on the property because she is there. I pay my own utilities, water ,gas, trash, electric ect. so I don't understand where they are comming up with the 400.00 figure. He said that I must pay it with my August rent! I don't have that kind of money. What can I do? Please help me . I live in Ohio Franklin County

Peter, I believe you are confusing the Constitutional rights of an American citizen with State of Ohio L/T laws. The guest the writer has talked about is no longer considered by the landlord as a temporary guest but another tenant on a month-to-month lease. If this tenant does not agree to pay the extra rent, then the new tenant can move out because L did not give written approval for another tenant to occupy the leased premises for free.

I have spoken to my landlord and told them who was staying with me and how long she would be there. I told her that they did have the right to know who was here and I also told her that I can not pay her 400 plus my regular 820.00 in rent. He agreed on an extra 100 for my sister to stay until the end of August. I figure that I will spend more just trying to fight with him. my lease is up in March and trust me I will be moving. I always thought that a 30 day notice was to be given when rent was raised? and if 1 more person living in a house is going to cause additional wear on the house then why do the people who live next door with 3 kids (i only have 2) pay the same amount as I do.

You did the right thing and I am happy that you have resolved the problem. Getting back to the Peter Constitution, absent any rent control, the landlord of your neighbor next door is free to charge any amount of rent be it lower or higher than what you pay.

Well maybe here in New York City a landlord would be in serious trouble if he tried that, the tenant would take him to court and the landlord would lose the judge would force the Lanlord to honor the lease.. and would have to pay the TENANT all his legal fees...

I feel sorry for you having such a disgusting landlord....

Now you know to take tons of pictures when you leave cause he wont give you back your security and you will have to sue him in small claims court....

Typical small minded idiot, thinks you are tring to get over on him...what a loser.
