My landlord just sent a letter stating his intention of raising my rent as of Aug 1st. of this year. My lease will not expire until Jan 31, 2001. Can he legally do that?

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

The point of a lease is to lock in a set price per month for a specific time period. Also, sometimes getting a lease can give you a discount on the monthly rent owed.

The landlord can't do that. Report him/her/them to the department of housing and urban development.

Hope this helps.

NOPE a lease is a lease...he cannot raise it for any reason....

So get ready to move by Jan 31st 2001... he will stiff you for a big increase in rent he has given you a warning!

Save your money NOW for moving expenses and DONT PISS IT AWAY ON CHRISTMAS PRESENTS,,DUH!

you will be moving in January!
