Roomate Problems

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Massachusetts. I was living with 3 other roomates up until May, and I was in charge of paying the utilities. One of my roomates, who was a friend of mine, asked for more time, and I had no problem giving it to him. Today I found out he is in China with no plans of ever paying me. He claims that because he never signed an agreement on the utilities, he isn't liable to pay his share of them even though for two years, it was the same, even split. He now owes me about $800.00. Is this a case easy to win in small claims court?
