security light

What is the name of your state?
Arkansas.

My neighbor has recently installed a security light on an existing power pole at the corner of their property and mine. The local electric company installs these lights, and the homeowner pays a nominal monthly fee added on to their electric bill. This is the brightest security light I have ever seen.
This light illuminates my entire property, which is a 3.85 acre plot.
It is so bright that anyone outside on my property at night casts a shadow!
We live in a rural setting, and this is my adjacent neighbor. On the other side and back of my property are wooded lots, and at the front, of course is the road.
Since the installation of this light, it is no longer possible to enjoy the night sky.
The light fixture itself is not on my property, do I have any say at all in how much night lighting illuminates my property?

**A: yes you do, but maybe start getting into shadow puppets rather than constellations.

You may want to contact code enforcement. I don't know exactly what you can do about it but there was a news article here several months ago about things like that and light pollution. Some people were successful at having their neighbors floodlights removed because of the amount of ambient? light cast on their property. I think code enforcement had a hand in that. Good luck.

Writer, call the police first and the police may ask the neighbor to readjust the angle of the light or install a smaller bulb etc.

Of course, you may just want to ask your neighbor politely first. That is, if your neighbors are nice people. Maybe, they just don't realize how bright it is.

Of course, then you may also just want to just take a gun and shoot out the damn light.

We had the same problem. Our neighbors have since admitted that they did it intentionally to harass us. We could literally read the newspaper in the middle of our
front yard at 10pm.

If you can't reason with them and they don't respond to a politely written letter requesting adjustment of the lights, do check with your local zoning or building department.

If that doesn't get you anywhere you could try calling the police. We did that. They adjusted the lights for about a week, and then pointed them back at our property.

We finally sued them for NUISSANCE DUE TO UNREASONABLE EMISSION OF LIGHT
among other things.

They have since removed the lights, but the lawsuit is pending.

I would try to settle the matter out of court if at all possible - it's very expensive and
frustrating, and will only escalate any hostilities you may already be having with your
neighbors.
