Squatter

What is the name of your state? TEXAS-- My mom sold a house sum years ago, the owner abandoned the property about 4 years ago.I have checked and it is in the new owners name and 3,000 in back taxes are owed. I happen to know the owner has moved out of state and wants nothing more to do with the property and is waiting for the city to take it over.My mom doesnt want it either. My question is if I move in and start paying the taxes and everything else on it, will I have any kind of squatters rights to it after a few years?Or where can I look in my city for this information ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes why don't you go ahead and pay SOMEONE elses tax bill for them. What right do YOU have to steal someone else's property?

You could either check out what is required to buy it in a tax sale (possibly for back taxes) or requirements for adverse possession. Without a deed, adverse possession would likely take 10 years before you could claim title according to § 16.026. ADVERSE POSSESSION: 10-YEAR LIMITATIONS at http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/docs/CP/content/htm/cp.002.00.000016.00.htm

But you might want to make sure that the title is free of any liens or loans that might suddenly foreclose on it and lock you out.

Safest would be to contact the current owner and see if you could get a deed for it.

Have a local title company run a title search on the place and get some idea of what is going on with that land.

Then make an offer to the legal landowner to buy the property.
